Avoiding Quitting Smoking Weight Gain
One of the most common worries people have when considering smoking cessation is weight gain. It's actually quite common to put on a few pounds after quitting, but you don't have to gain a lot and there are ways of avoiding quitting smoking weight gain. You should know that some people, especially those who make smoking cessation a serious lifestyle change, end up in better shape than ever before. There are a wide variety of diet and exercise techniques that can help you fight the battle of the bulge while keeping your lungs smoke-free.
The first step is recognizing your smoking and eating habits. Do you normally smoke when you drink coffee or alcohol? If so, cut these beverages out of your diet. You can substitute green tea for coffee which is packed with beneficial antioxidants. Many people smoke when driving. If you're one of them, try sugarless chewing gum instead. It may be tempting to binge eat while you experience the symptoms of nicotine withdrawal, which leads to weight loss. Many people find comfort in fatty foods and replace cigarettes with them, which is the wrong thing to do.
Many experts recommend a grazing diet, where you eat healthy foods (especially protein) every few hours. This keeps hunger down and helps your metabolism function at optimum levels. This type of diet is often called a calorie shifting diet. And because you eat frequently, your desire to smoke is reduced. Choose crunchy, healthy vegetables and fruits like celery, carrots, apples and the like to keep your hands and mouth busy. When an especially fierce urge strikes, brush your teeth or pop a breath mint. A walk around the block (or two) is another good idea.
Speaking of exercise, it is something that should already be part of your daily life but may not be. Some smokers experience shortness of breath, coughing and fatigue when trying to exercise. Once you stop smoking, it will become much easier to exercise over time. Aim for at least three sessions of cardio each week. This includes exercise like aerobics, stair climbing, jogging, brisk walking, swimming and dancing. Strength and flexibility training is also important in order to sculpt lean muscle and keep your metabolism humming along. A healthy diet and regular workouts can help you avoid the dreaded quitting smoking weight gain while improving your overall wellness.
