Creating Your Quitting Smoking Timeline
The decision to stop smoking is a big one. For many people, cigarettes are a coping method for stress and anxiety. Most of all, cigarette use is an addiction to nicotine. While it can be very hard for some to quit the cigs, others can put them down without a problem. Because everyone's brain chemistry is different there are different methods available. For example, some people can simply decide to stop smoking, throw out their cigarettes and never pick another one up. Called cold turkey, this is not a popular method and there is a high incidence in relapse for smokers who are unprepared for nicotine withdrawal. It's best to set a quitting smoking timeline and taper down to the designated date.
Even if you do decide upon the cold turkey method, you need a quit smoking plan. It's not as easy as you might think, especially when you've still got nicotine coursing through your body and boldly announce you're quitting. Quit smoking plans start with a quit date. Look on your calendar and choose a date at least two weeks away. Circle the date in red, highlight it, whatever you need to do to remember it is your official quit date. Between now and your chosen quit date, your job is to taper down gradually on your cigarette use. If you are a heavy smoker you may require a longer tapering period.
For those who don't want to try the cold turkey method there are quit smoking pills available from your doctor like Zyban and Chantix. These drugs work to reduce your cravings as well as the side effects of nicotine withdrawal. Zyban is sometimes used together with the nicotine patch for additional help. Nicotine replacement therapy, or NRT, is a chosen quit smoking plan for some. This usually involves choosing either a patch, gum or lozenges and using it until gradually tapering off, just like you would with cigarettes.
Discuss your quitting smoking timeline with your doctor. He or she can answer all your questions and give you quit tips. They can also recommend the right medication or over the counter product to help you through the process. It all depends on your personal preferences, lifestyle, current medications you are taking and any health conditions you may have. There are also herbal products like lobelia and even homeopathic remedies that claim to help you quit smoking, which may interest those looking for a natural approach.
